Candy Cane Stripes

Ever wonder how to make stripes at the bottom of a bowl of water? All you need is a candy cane.
Unwrap the candy cane, put it in a shallow dish of water, and let it sit for several minutes. The stripes will slowly dissolve into the water and spread across the bottom of the bowl.

  1. I just found this blog and I LOVE it! About how much water did you put in the bowl? Does the candy just sit at the top of the water?
    Thanks for sharing your ideas!

  2. I put a few inches of water in the bowl. The candy cane sinks to the bottom, and as the candy stripes dissolve, the sugar water sinks, forming the patterns on the bottom of the bowl. (I did try this recently with a Bob's candy cane, and no stripes were formed, but my inquisitive young observers might have been bumping or stirring the bowl.)

  3. I love this. What a great easy experiment that shows color and a great way to use up those candy canes!

  4. Thanks! We have fun with this one too, especially when the candy canes have so many colors. You can also do it with Starlight mints (the round stripy ones.)
